October 21, 2017 – Warren Broderick: “Murder at Oakwood”

Murder at Oakwood

For a short time in the early Spring of 1870 the relaxing solitude of Oakwood Cemetery was interrupted by a sensational murder and suicide involving one of Troy’s oldest families. Nanning Vanderhyden was killed by his son-in-law, young Edward Alexander who took his own life five days later. In the meantime Troy and Lansingburgh residents were gripped with hysteria while law enforcement officers bungled the investigation. Only after the murderer’s secret funeral was the public’s lust for vengeance finally glutted and Jennie Vanderheyden could conclude her mourning and resume a semblance of a normal life.

Historian Warren F. Broderick, in costume as County Coroner Thomas Hurley, will finally release his official report on the investigation and sparing no details, will delineate fact from fiction and relate a truly tragic tale for the first time after 147 years of silence. Coroner Hurley will present his report at 10:00 AM sharp at the Herman Melville house and then he will lead the curious public to Oakwood to visit the scene of the tragedy.
