Proposed retrocession of Batestown (November 15, 1869)

—Some years since [July 1, 1836] the portion of the village of Lansingburgh lying adjacent to the city [i.e. Batestown] was set off from the 'burgh and annexed to Troy. Last Winter we proposed to take all the villagers into Troy and make enterprising people of them, but they would have none of it and are still living in the outside barbarian world. Now, however, they propose to turn the tables upon us, and instead of being annexed the citizens of the village have initiated a movement to take from us some of our fair possessions—repossessing themselves of the portion ceded to Troy a few years since. A petition, numerously signed, will be presented to the next Legislature, asking for the retrocession of this territory. The citizens up there say they have had enough of Democratic rule in Troy, and they want to get back to their first love.
